Flags

There is a tangled flag on the moon for every country on Earth — 195 of them. Each one pays out when you untangle it, they show up on the moon map once found, and finding the last few is the longest grind in a full completion.

How flags work

  • Walk up to a flag and press E to untangle it. It takes a moment, then the flag is raised and you get paid.
  • Reward: $100 in the release build; later patches have shown $200 per flag.
  • The moon map counts flags found out of 195 and marks each one you have raised.
  • Flags are not tied to achievements, but they are part of the moon map's completion counters.

Where flags are

Flags are spread fairly evenly over the whole sphere — plains, crater floors, mountain sides and both poles. Several are within a kilometre of North Station. They only render when you are reasonably close, so the best way to find them is a systematic sweep in a fast vehicle, marking where you have been. Full method in the Flag Hunting Guide.

Identifying flags

The game names each flag when you untangle it, so you do not need to know your vexillology. That said, several flags are easy to mix up at a glance — the Scandinavian crosses (Iceland, Norway), the green-yellow-red tricolours, and a few that look like the US flag at a distance (Malaysia, Liberia). Do not skip a flag because you think you already raised it; walk up and check.
